Companion modules that speak every vendor's language
Hardware and software only talk when somebody writes the translation. Bitfocus Companion modules are exactly that translator. Each module knows the control protocol of a specific product — a switcher, a playback app, a lighting desk, a PTZ camera, a recorder — and quietly turns those commands into buttons your Stream Deck can fire. Install one and all the tedious network work disappears.
What a module actually handles
People sometimes confuse a module with a plugin, and it basically is. Pick a device from the library, add a new instance, point it at the device address or the software location, and Companion starts talking. After that, the device shows up in the action list, so you can attach a cut, an auto-transition, or a start clip command to almost any key.
Connection
Handles the socket or protocol, so you never open a manual or hunt for a port again. Login details and passwords stay inside the module config.
Actions
Each module exposes its command set, whether a simple recall or a multi-variable macro with parameters you adjust.
Variables
Live counts, active sources, and status values stream in so labels and buttons update by themselves.
Finding the right module
Open the module tab in the web admin and you will find a search bar at the top. Type a brand or a model — a switcher name, a mixer name, or any application — and the list narrows. The bitfocus companion modules directory is where the community and manufacturers all meet, so if something is missing, posting in the forum often gets someone building it.
Switchers
ATEM, vMix, OBS, Ross, TriCaster and more. Recall presets, cut, or transition a camera with a single key.
Mixers
Yamaha, Midas, and many others. Mute, unmute, and ride a fader from the corner of the stage or a control room.
Consoles

Module updates land quietly
Because Bitfocus Companion is open source, module authors ship updates on their own rhythm. When you open the web admin, available updates show up in a clear view, and applying one takes seconds. Read the changelog; sometimes a module adds a brand new action you had been asking about for a long time.

Learn the vocabulary
Give each module a nickname, a color, and a purpose. A well named module set saves you from confusion six months from now.
